What's the difference between a dressage and a jumping saddle pad?
A dressage saddle pad is cut long and straight to match the vertical flap of a dressage saddle. A jumping saddle pad is shorter and more forward-cut to follow the flap of a jumping or general purpose saddle. Using the shape that matches your saddle keeps the pad in place and looks neater.
What size Emmers saddle pad should I order?
It depends on the size of your saddle. Emmers typically offer their saddle pads in a Cob or Full size.
Can I use a dressage pad with a jumping saddle?
You can, but it won't sit well. The flap of a jumping saddle will fall short of the pad's edge, leaving excess fabric in front of your leg and behind the saddle. It's fine at home in a pinch, less so anywhere you want to look put together.
How should a saddle pad fit?
The pad should extend slightly beyond the edge of the saddle on all sides, roughly two to three centimetres without hanging so far that it flaps or bunches. At the front, it needs to be pulled well up into the gullet before you girth up, so there's clearance over the withers and no pressure on the spine.
How do I wash a saddle pad?
Brush off dried hair and sweat first, or it will turn to felt in the machine. Then wash cool on a gentle cycle without fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces how well the pad absorbs sweat. Let it air dry rather than tumble drying, and always check the care label on your own pad, as instructions can differ per model.
