Lightweight Turnout Rugs | Emmers Equestrian

A lightweight turnout rug gives your horse just a little extra warmth when the weather turns cooler, without the bulk of a winter rug. With a light filling of around 50 to 100 grams, these rugs are ideal for chilly spring and autumn days, mild winters, and cool nights. They protect against rain, wind, and mud while keeping your horse comfortable in changing temperatures.

Why choose a 100g turnout rug?

A 100g turnout rug sits right between a rain sheet and a medium-weight winter rug. It adds just enough insulation for days when a rain sheet isn’t quite warm enough, but a 200g or 300g rug would be too much. That makes it one of the most versatile rugs in your horse’s wardrobe, especially for horses that are partly clipped, older horses, or horses with a thinner coat.

What to look for in a lightweight turnout rug

  • Waterproof and breathable: a breathable outer fabric with taped seams keeps rain out while letting moisture and excess heat escape.
  • Durable outer fabric: a higher denier (such as 600D or 1200D) is more resistant to wear and tears in the field.
  • Comfortable fit: shoulder gussets, adjustable chest closures, and cross surcingles give freedom of movement and prevent rubbing or slipping.
  • Neck cover: a rug with a (detachable) neck adds extra protection against wind and rain.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lightweight turnout rug?

A lightweight turnout rug is a waterproof outdoor rug with a light filling, usually between 50 and 100 grams. It protects your horse from rain and wind and adds a little extra warmth for cooler days.

When should I use a 100g turnout rug?

A 100g turnout rug is ideal for temperatures of roughly 10 to 15°C, or on cool, wet days in spring and autumn. In a mild winter it can also be enough for horses with a good natural coat. Every horse is different, so always check under the rug whether your horse feels comfortable.

What’s the difference between a rain sheet and a lightweight turnout rug?

A rain sheet has no filling and only protects against wet weather. A lightweight turnout rug has a thin layer of filling, so it gives a bit of extra warmth as well as rain protection.

Is a lightweight turnout rug warm enough for winter?

For most clipped horses or cold winter days, a lightweight rug won’t be warm enough. Then a medium-weight (150 to 250g) or heavyweight (300g or more) rug is a better choice. For unclipped horses with a thick coat, a lightweight turnout rug can be enough in a mild winter.

Can I combine a lightweight turnout rug with a liner?

Yes. Adding a liner or fleece rug underneath makes a lightweight turnout rug warmer when temperatures drop. This gives you a flexible layering system for changing weather.

Won’t my horse get too warm under a lightweight rug?

Lightweight turnout rugs are breathable, so excess heat and moisture can escape. On mild or sunny days, check regularly that your horse isn’t sweating under the rug, and switch to a rain sheet if needed.

What size turnout rug does my horse need?

Measure your horse from the centre of the chest, along the side, to the point of the buttock. That length in centimetres is the rug size. Some brands use sizes in feet (such as 6'3), so always check the size chart on the product page.

How do I care for a lightweight turnout rug?

Brush off dried mud first, then wash the rug at a low temperature with a special rug detergent. Don’t use fabric softener, as it can affect the waterproofing. Let the rug air dry and always follow the care label.
