Horse Breeding & Foaling: Supplements and Supplies for Mares, Stallions and Foals | Emmers Equestrian

Breeding a foal starts long before the birth. A healthy, balanced mare, a fertile stallion, and good preparation for foaling all play a part in a successful breeding season. At Emmers Equestrian, you’ll find breeding supplements for mares and stallions, together with links to the foaling equipment and foal care products you need to welcome a new foal safely.

Supplements for mares: a balanced cycle

Hormonal changes during the cycle can make some mares restless, moody, or difficult to handle, both in the stable and under saddle. Supplements for mares are designed to support a regular, balanced cycle and a more relaxed mare.

  • Cavalor Venus is an herbal liquid with monk’s pepper (chasteberry), marjoram, magnesium, and vitamin B6 that supports the mare’s natural cycle without blocking it.
  • Equine America No More Moods is made for mares that show strong mood swings when in season.

Both are popular with breeders preparing mares for the breeding season, as well as with riders of sport mares who want a more consistent horse throughout the year.

Supplements for stallions: fertility support

Breeding stallions have a demanding season, and good nutrition helps them stay in top condition. Equine America Stallion Fertility is designed to support stallions used for breeding, especially during the busy covering or collection season. For stallions that also compete, combine it with the right muscle and electrolyte support.

Getting ready for foaling

As the due date approaches, preparation makes all the difference. A birth alarm alerts you the moment your mare starts foaling, so you can be there when it matters without spending every night in the stable. Make sure the foaling box is clean, roomy, and well-bedded, and keep a foaling kit ready with clean towels, a tail bandage, disinfectant, and your vet’s phone number. Our stable equipment and wound care ranges have the basics you’ll need.

Support for the mare and foal after birth

After foaling, the mare needs extra energy and nutrients to produce milk and recover. A good base of vitamins & minerals helps cover the higher needs of lactating mares.

For the foal, the first weeks are all about a healthy start: Foran Friska Foal is made for newborn foals, and our digestive supplements help support young horses through feed changes and weaning. Once your foal is ready for handling, browse our headcollars, available down to foal sizes.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start feeding a mare supplement before the breeding season?

Most cycle-support supplements need some time to work, so start a few weeks before the breeding season or before you plan to inseminate. Always follow the instructions on the product label and discuss your breeding plan with your vet.

Can I give a cycle-support supplement to a competing mare?

Many mare supplements are designed with sport horses in mind, and some brands state their products are allowed under FEI rules. Always check the product information and your federation’s rules before competing.

Does a mare supplement stop the cycle?

No. Supplements like Cavalor Venus are designed to support a more regular, balanced cycle, not to stop it. If you need to suppress your mare’s cycle completely, talk to your vet about the options.

How does a birth alarm work?

A birth alarm detects the moment your mare starts foaling, for example when she lies down flat on her side or when her body temperature or movement changes, depending on the system. It sends an alert to your phone or a receiver so you can be there in time.

What should be in a foaling kit?

Clean towels, a tail bandage, a bucket and mild disinfectant, iodine or a navel dip for the foal, a torch, gloves, a clock to note the timing, and your vet’s number. Prepare it a few weeks before the due date.

How much more does a lactating mare need to eat?

A mare in early lactation has much higher energy, protein, and mineral needs than a mare that isn’t in foal. Adjust her ration together with your vet or a feed advisor to keep her in good condition.
