Pessoa & Beval Bits – Adjustable Leverage Between Snaffle and Curb | Emmers Equestrian
Some horses sit between needing a plain snaffle and a full curb bit. At Emmers Equestrian, our Pessoa and Beval bits offer adjustable rein positions to bridge that gap, alongside the rest of our horse bits.
Both use multiple rings, with rein position generally considered to determine how much leverage is introduced. Beval bits are typically the milder option, while Pessoa bits usually offer more positions for a wider range of adjustment. Mouthpieces include single-jointed, double-jointed, lozenge, French link, mullen, and roller designs, in materials from stainless steel to sweet iron, rubber, and leather.
Our Pessoa and Beval bits come from trusted bit makers, including TRUST, Poponcini, Metalab, and Sprenger.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Beval bit?
A multi-ring snaffle-mouthed bit is generally considered to offer a milder leverage effect depending on rein position.
What is a Pessoa bit?
A similar multi-ring design, typically offering more rein positions for a wider range of adjustment.
What's the difference between them?
The Beval is usually considered the milder option, while the Pessoa offers a wider adjustment range.
Do these bits need a curb chain?
Generally not, which is often seen as a key difference from a Pelham or Weymouth.
Which rein ring should I use?
Many riders start at the mildest setting and adjust only if needed, ideally with instructor input.
Can I ride with two reins?
Yes, and some riders find this offers more flexibility than a single rein.
Are these bits allowed in competition?
This varies by discipline and federation, so checking current rules is worthwhile.
Are Pessoa and Beval bits stronger than a snaffle?
This can depend on rein position, so it's worth discussing with your instructor what's appropriate for your horse.
