AJR Sport Bits: Soft Mouthpieces, Precise Communication | Emmers Equestrian
AJR Sport is known for bits with soft, horse-friendly mouthpieces, combined with a wide choice of cheekpieces. The result is a bit that gives you clear, precise control while staying comfortable in your horse’s mouth. That makes AJR a popular choice among show jumpers, eventers, and riders of sensitive horses that don’t settle well in a classic metal bit. Mouthpieces for sensitive mouths
Many AJR bits are made from soft or warm materials that feel gentle on the tongue, bars, and lips: Silomorph, Siloflex, and Intuflex: soft, flexible synthetic mouthpieces that follow the shape of the mouth and give a mild, even contact.
- Vulcanite and rubber: warm, slightly thicker mouthpieces that many horses accept quickly.
- Rubber block and leather: a covered mouthpiece for horses that are sensitive to metal.
- Copper roller and brass link: metal options that encourage your horse to mouth the bit and salivate. Mullen, port, jointed, or Waterford
Choose the mouthpiece shape that suits your horse. A mullen mouth is unjointed with a gentle curve, giving a steady contact without a nutcracker action. A port adds an arch in the middle for extra tongue relief. Single- and double-jointed bits offer a familiar snaffle action, and a Waterford is flexible and hard to lean on.

How do I care for an AJR Sport bit?
Rinse the bit with lukewarm water after every ride and let it dry before storing. Check silicone, rubber, and vulcanite mouthpieces regularly for bite marks, cracks, or wear, and replace the bit if the surface is damaged, as rough edges can hurt your horse’s mouth.
