Hoof & Coat Supplements for Horses: Strong Hooves, Healthy Skin and a Shiny Coat | Emmers Equestrian

Strong hooves and a glossy coat start on the inside. Hoof horn, skin, and hair are all built from the nutrients your horse takes in, and when the diet falls short, it often shows first in cracked or crumbly hooves, lost shoes, or a dull, dry coat. Hoof and coat supplements help fill those gaps. At Emmers Equestrian, you’ll find hoof supplements, coat oils, and skin support from brands such as Cavalor, Equine America, TRM, Foran, Global Medics, Kevin Bacon’s, Intibio, and our own Emmers line.

Hoof supplements for stronger horn

A healthy hoof needs a steady supply of the building blocks for good-quality horn. Biotin is the best-known of these, but it works best together with other nutrients such as zinc, copper, methionine, and sulfur. That’s why most hoof supplements combine several ingredients instead of biotin alone. Horses with brittle, cracked, or slow-growing hooves; horses that lose shoes easily; and barefoot horses on hard ground can all benefit from extra support. In this collection you’ll find hoof supplements such as Emmers Biotine Forte, Equine America Biotin Xtra, Super Hoof Plus, Farrier’s Choice, TRM Hoofmaker, Foran Hoofaid, Kevin Bacon’s Hoof Formula, Cavalor Hoof Aid Special, and DBS Hoof Supply.

For horses that need extra care around the hoof, Cavalor Laminaid is designed to support horses prone to hoof sensitivity, always as part of a plan made with your vet and farrier. Oils for a shiny coat and healthy skin A dull, dry coat is often a sign that your horse could use more healthy fats. Oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids support skin and coat condition and add extra energy without adding starch. Linseed oil is a classic choice and one of the most affordable ways to bring out the shine.

Our range includes Emmers Linseed Oil, Equine America Supreme Omega Oil, and Foran Kentucky Karronoil. Skin support and all-in-one formulas Some horses need support for both hooves and coats or extra care for sensitive skin. Global Medics Hoof & Coat combines both in one product, Equine America MSM provides a source of organic sulfur, and Equine America Skin-Gard is designed to support skin condition in horses with sensitive or irritated skin.

For horses that suffer from itching in summer, combine skin support with products from our sweet itch and fly protection ranges.

Patience pays off: how long hoof supplements take

  • The hoof wall grows slowly, roughly 1 cm per month, and it takes about 9 to 12 months for new horn to grow from the coronary band down to the ground. That means you’ll usually see the first improvement at the top of the hoof after a few months, while the full result takes most of a year. Feeding consistently and not stopping too soon is the key to success.
  • Coat results come faster: many horses show a better shine within a few weeks of adding an oil. Inside and outside care.
  • Supplements work best together with good daily care. Regular visits from your farrier, clean and dry bedding, and the right topical products all make a difference.

Browse our hoof care range for hoof oils, balms, and disinfectants, and our shampoo & detangler and grooming products to finish the shine from the outside.

Frequently asked questions

What does biotin do for horses?

Biotin is a B vitamin that plays a role in producing keratin, the protein that hoof horn is made of. Extra biotin can help support hoof quality, especially in horses with brittle or cracked hooves. It works best when combined with other nutrients like zinc, copper, and methionine.

How long does it take for a hoof supplement to work?

Hoof horn grows about 1 cm per month, so it takes roughly 9 to 12 months for a completely new hoof wall to grow down. You’ll usually notice improvement near the coronary band after 3 to 4 months. Keep feeding consistently for the best result.

Can I stop the hoof supplement once the hooves look better?

Many horses with weak hooves benefit from continuous support, since the hoof keeps growing. If you stop, the quality of the new horn may drop again over time. Talk to your farrier about what’s best for your horse.

What’s the best oil for a shiny horse coat?

Linseed oil is one of the most popular choices because it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support skin and coat health. Start with a small amount and build up gradually so your horse’s digestion can adjust.

Can I combine a hoof supplement with a vitamin and mineral supplement?

Often yes, but check the labels first. Some general supplements already contain biotin, zinc, and copper, and doubling up isn’t always necessary. If you’re unsure, ask your vet or nutritionist.

Are hoof and coat supplements allowed in competition?

Most hoof and coat supplements contain ingredients that are allowed, but always check the product information and the rules of your federation (for example the FEI) before competing.
