Flair Equine Nasal Strips: Breathing Support for Training and Competition | Emmers Equestrian

Fast work, jumping, and cross-country ask a lot of your horse's breathing, and many riders add a nasal strip to their competition routine. Flair Equine Nasal Strips are self-adhesive, drug-free strips that sit on the nose and are designed to help hold the nasal passages open during exercise. They are quick to apply, easy to pack, and available in black, white, and national flag designs.

Why riders choose Flair

  • Drug-free and easy to use: a self-adhesive strip you apply to a clean, dry nose, with no preparation needed beyond that.
  • Look the part: choose black or white to suit your horse and tack, or show your colors with the Dutch, Belgian, German, or French flag designs.
  • Always ready: a single strip fits in the competition bag, and the 6-pack keeps you stocked for regular use.

How to apply

  • According to the instructions: Apply at least 30 minutes before exertion.
  • Use a clean, dry nose, without alcohol, water, or gels, and do not shave the nose.
  • Place the strip two fingers above the nostrils, and avoid touching the adhesive layer.

Follow the instructions on your pack, and try a strip at home before competition so you see how your horse reacts. A strip is a piece of equipment and not a treatment. If your horse coughs, has a nasal discharge, makes noises when breathing or tires early, ask your vet first. For respiratory care around the stable, see our respiratory and inhalation and airways and respiratory supplements collections.

Frequently asked questions

What are Flair Equine Nasal Strips designed for?

They are self-adhesive strips applied above the horse's nostrils, designed to help hold the nasal passages open during hard exercise. They are a piece of equipment and not a treatment.

How do I apply a Flair strip?

Apply it to a clean, dry nose, two fingers above the nostrils, at least 30 minutes before exertion. Do not shave the nose or use water, alcohol, gels or extra glue. Follow the instructions on your pack.

Should I choose the 1-pack or the 6-pack?

The 1-pack suits trying a strip or occasional use. The 6-pack suits regular use and costs less per strip. Both come in black and white, and the single strips are also available in flag designs.

Do nasal strips work, and do they treat breathing problems?

A small Kansas State University study of seven horses on a treadmill found about 50 percent less exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage, but it was a small study. A strip does not cure respiratory problems, so ask your vet if you are concerned about your horse's breathing.

Are nasal strips allowed in competition?

It depends on the discipline and the federation. The FEI's 2023 eventing guidelines allow correctly fitted nose tapes in cross-country and jumping, but not in dressage. Check the current rules of your own federation before you compete.
