A stud girth, also called a jumping girth or belly guard girth, is made for show jumping. When a horse tucks its front legs tightly over a fence, the studs in its front shoes can reach its belly. The wide, padded front panel of a stud girth covers that area and helps prevent cuts and bruises. This means your horse can jump freely and with confidence, round after round.
Why choose a stud girth?
A good jumping girth does more than protect. An anatomical shape leaves room behind the elbows, so your horse can move its shoulders freely and keep a natural stride. The girth spreads pressure evenly, which helps the saddle stay stable through take-off, landing and tight turns. Many riders also use a stud girth when they are not using studs, because the extra coverage gives peace of mind during training.
Top brands for stud girths
- CWD: The CWD Anatomic Belly Guard Girth and Anatomic Jumping Girth with Flexmotion are a favourite with show jumpers who want a premium anatomical girth.
- Prestige and Renaissance by Prestige: This Italian brand offers the Prestige Stud Guard Girth and the RP Jump Girth with elastic on both sides. Renaissance is its luxury line.
- Kentucky Horsewear: The Kentucky Anatomical Stud Girth comes with or without a sheepskin lining. It is a good choice for horses with sensitive skin.
- HFI: HFI has stud girths at an accessible price, including a model with snap hook and the Stud Guard Girth Magnet.
- LJ Leathers: The LJ Bellyguard Girth is available in plain leather or with a soft wool lining.
- Erreplus: Erreplus makes both a stud girth and a jumping girth in fine leather.
How to find the right stud girth
Pay attention to these points when you choose a girth:
- Size: Our stud girths come in sizes from 90 to 160 cm. Measure from the middle hole on one side, under the belly, to the middle hole on the other side. This tells you which girth length you need.
- Lining: Plain leather is classic and easy to care for. Sheepskin or wool linings, for example from Kentucky Horsewear and LJ Leathers, are extra soft and reduce the risk of rubbing.
- Elastic: A girth with elastic on both sides, such as the Prestige RP Jump Girth, gives a little with your horse’s breathing and movement.
- Saddle type: Jumping and general purpose saddles usually have long billets, so they need a long girth.
Caring for your jumping girth
Remove sand and sweat after every ride so the material stays soft and the lining stays fresh. Treat leather regularly with a leather care product. Check the buckles and stitching often, because a girth has to be strong and reliable.
Frequently asked questions about stud girths
What is the difference between a stud girth and a normal girth?
A stud girth has a wide, padded panel at the front that covers the horse’s belly. A normal girth is narrower and doesn’t have this panel. The panel protects the belly from the studs in the front shoes when the horse tucks its legs over a jump.
Which brands of stud girths does Emmers Equestrian sell?
We sell stud girths from CWD, Prestige, Renaissance by Prestige, Kentucky Horsewear, HFI, LJ Leathers and Erreplus. This gives you a choice from affordable everyday girths to premium anatomical models.
Do I need a stud girth if my horse doesn’t wear studs?
It isn’t required, but many riders choose one anyway. Horses that fold their legs up tightly can also touch their belly with their shoes when they don’t wear studs. The extra coverage gives some protection in that case.
Can I use a stud girth for dressage?
Usually not. Most dressage saddles have short billets and need a short girth, while stud girths are long girths for jumping and general purpose saddles.
How do I know if my stud girth fits correctly?
When you have tightened the girth, the buckles on both sides should be at about the same height, and there should still be holes left to tighten further. You should be able to slide a flat hand between the girth and your horse. Check that the girth doesn’t press against the back of the elbows.
What if the girth doesn’t fit?
You can exchange your girth within 14 days. Our team can also help you choose the right size online or in one of our stores.
Is a stud girth allowed in competitions?
Yes, stud girths are commonly used in show jumping competitions. Rules can differ between federations and classes, so always check the current rules of your competition.
How do I clean a stud girth?
Brush or wipe off sweat and sand after every ride. Clean leather with a leather cleaner and treat it with a leather balm. For sheepskin and wool linings, brush the lining regularly and follow the care label.
Can I buy stud girths online with worldwide delivery?
