When do riders wear an equestrian cap?
Whenever they are not riding. A cap is everyday wear on the yard, for course walks, at the ringside and at prize-givings. It shades your eyes, keeps your hair tidy after you take your helmet off, and shows your favourite brand or your sponsor.
Can I wear a cap instead of a helmet for horse riding?
No. A cap offers no protection in a fall. Always wear a certified riding helmet in the saddle, and keep your cap for the time you spend on the ground.
Is an equestrian hat the same as a riding helmet?
In British English, "riding hat" usually means a riding helmet. This collection contains fashion headwear: caps, beanies, straw hats and visors. If you are looking for protective riding hats, go to our helmets collection.
Do you sell equestrian skull caps?
A skull cap is a type of riding helmet without a fixed peak, used mostly for cross-country and racing. It is protective equipment, so you will find riding helmets in our helmets collection and not here.
Can I wear a beanie under my riding helmet?
It is not recommended. A beanie changes how the helmet fits and can make it sit loose or too high. For warm ears while riding, choose a thin headband or ear warmer that sits below the helmet, and follow the fitting advice of your helmet's manufacturer.
What hats and gloves do I need for horse riding in winter?
For riding: your helmet, a thin headband or ear warmer below it, a neck warmer and lined riding gloves that still give you feel on the reins. For the yard: a beanie, a scarf and warmer gloves you can swap into when you dismount.
Do the caps and beanies come in one size?
Most do. Caps have an adjustable strap at the back and beanies stretch, so one size fits most adults. A few styles, such as straw hats, come in head sizes from 54 to 58. Measure around your head just above the ears to find yours.
How do I wash a cap or a beanie?
Wash caps by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and let them dry over a bowl or a ball so the peak keeps its shape. Wash beanies on a gentle wool cycle or by hand and dry them flat. Check the care label first.
Are caps and beanies a good gift for a rider?
Yes. They are one size, easy to post and useful every day, which makes them one of the safest gifts for a horse lover. If you are unsure about colour or brand, a gift card is the alternative.
