Dog coats and rugs: wearable dog blankets for every season
A dog that comes to the yard spends a lot of time waiting: beside the arena, in the lorry, at the ringside. A well-fitting dog coat keeps your dog warm and dry while you ride. Our collection comes from Kentucky Dogwear, the dog line of Belgian brand Kentucky Horsewear, and includes dog rugs, waterproof coats, raincoats, winter coats and fleece sweaters in sizes from XXXS to XXXL.
Dog rugs
The dog rug is the classic of the range: a quilted, wearable dog blanket in the same style as a horse rug. It is the everyday choice for cool, dry days and comes in a wide choice of colours, including a waterproof version for wet weather.
Waterproof dog coats and raincoats
For wet walks and rainy show days, choose a waterproof dog coat or a lighter dog raincoat. The waterproof coat adds warmth as well as protection, while the raincoat keeps your dog dry in milder weather without overheating.
Winter coats and fleece
When it turns cold, a padded winter dog coat gives the most warmth. Fleece coats and teddy fleece sweaters are softer and lighter. They suit dry days, indoor arenas and the car, and work as a layer under a waterproof coat.
Towel and reflective coats
A towel coat dries your dog after a swim, a bath or a wet walk, and keeps your car seats clean on the way home. A reflective coat makes your dog easier to see on dark winter mornings and evenings at the yard.
How to choose a dog coat
- Measure the back: from the base of the neck, where the collar sits, to the base of the tail. Compare it with the size chart on the product page.
- Check the chest: deep-chested dogs often need the next size up.
- Think about the weather: waterproof for rain, padded for cold, fleece for dry and mild days.
- Long-backed breeds: several coats come in a dedicated Dachshund/Teckel size.
- Freedom of movement: your dog should be able to walk, sit and lie down without the coat shifting.

Frequently asked questions
Does my dog need a coat?
Many dogs do in cold or wet weather. Small dogs, short-haired and lean breeds, older dogs, puppies and dogs that have been clipped lose heat quickly. A coat also helps any dog that has to wait still for long periods, as dogs at the yard or a show often do.
What is the difference between a dog rug, a dog coat and a dog blanket?
A dog rug and a dog coat are both worn by the dog; "rug" comes from the horse world and usually means a quilted style. A dog blanket normally means a blanket to lie on. This collection contains wearable coats and rugs. For something to lie on, see our dog beds.
How do I measure my dog for a coat?
Have your dog stand square and measure along the back from the base of the neck, where the collar sits, to the base of the tail. That back length is the main measurement. Then measure around the widest part of the chest and compare both with the size chart on the product page.
Which dog coat fits a dachshund?
Dachshunds have a long back and short legs, so standard sizes are often too short or too deep. Several Kentucky coats and rugs come in a dedicated Dachshund/Teckel size, cut longer in the back. You will find it in the size options on the product page.
Should I choose a waterproof dog coat or a raincoat?
Choose a waterproof coat when it is both wet and cold, because it adds warmth too. Choose a raincoat for mild, rainy days, when your dog needs to stay dry but would be too hot in a lined coat. Active or thick-coated dogs are usually better off with the lighter raincoat.
What is a dog towel coat for?
A towel coat is an absorbent coat your dog wears after getting wet. It dries the coat while your dog rests or travels, so you do not need to rub them down, and it keeps water and mud off your car and furniture.
Can a dog wear a coat all day?
A coat is for outdoors and for waiting around in the cold. Take it off indoors, in a warm car and when your dog is running hard. Heavy panting, restlessness or trying to get the coat off are signs that your dog is too warm.
How do I wash a dog coat?
Brush off dried mud and hair first, close all the fastenings and follow the washing instructions on the care label. Skip fabric softener on waterproof and fleece coats, and let the coat air dry. Washing it regularly keeps the lining soft and the fastenings working.
How fast is delivery, and can I return a dog coat?
We ship worldwide. Orders to Belgium and the Netherlands usually arrive 1–2 business days after dispatch. For returns check our guidlines on our returns page.
