Rain Sheets & 0g Turnout Rugs | Emmers Equestrian
A rain sheet is the go-to rug for the in-between seasons. These turnout rugs without filling protect your horse from rain, wind, and mud without making it too warm. They’re perfect for wet spring days, changeable autumn weeks, or mild winters, and for horses with a full winter coat that mainly need to stay dry in the field.
Why choose a rain sheet?
A wet coat loses its insulating properties, so your horse cools down faster. A waterproof, breathable rain sheet keeps the coat dry while letting body heat and moisture escape. This keeps your horse comfortable and helps prevent sweating under the rug. Your horse also stays clean, which saves time when grooming.
What to look for
- Outer fabric: a higher denier (such as 600D or 1200D) is stronger and less likely to tear, ideal for horses that like to play in the field.
- Waterproof and breathable: choose a rug with taped seams and a breathable outer fabric, so rain stays out and moisture can still escape.
- Fit: Shoulder gussets, adjustable closures, and cross-sunglasses give freedom of movement and prevent rubbing or slipping.
- With or without a neck: a rug with a (detachable) neck cover offers extra protection against heavy rain and wind.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rain Sheets & 0g Turnout Rugs
What is a rain sheet?
A rain sheet is a waterproof turnout rug without filling (0g). It protects your horse from rain, wind, and mud in the field without adding extra warmth.
When should I use a rain sheet?
A rain sheet is ideal for wet, windy weather with mild temperatures, typically in spring and autumn. In a mild winter, a rain sheet is often enough for horses that aren’t clipped and have a good winter coat.
What’s the difference between a rain sheet and a winter rug?
A rain sheet has no filling and mainly protects against wet weather. A winter rug has a filling (for example 150, 200 or 300 grams) and provides extra warmth at lower temperatures.
Won’t my horse get too warm under a rain sheet?
A good rain sheet is breathable, so heat and moisture can escape. In warmer or sunny weather, check regularly that your horse isn’t sweating under the rug.
Can I combine a rain sheet with a liner?
Yes. Many riders use a rain sheet as the outer layer and add a liner or fleece rug underneath when it gets colder. That gives you one flexible solution for changing weather.
What size rain sheet does my horse need?
Measure your horse from the centre of the chest, along the side, to the point of the buttock. That length in centimetres is the rug size. Note that some brands use their own sizing or sizes in feet (such as 6'3), so always check the size chart on the product page.
How do I care for a rain sheet?
Brush off dried mud first, then wash the rug at a low temperature with a special rug detergent. Don’t use fabric softener, as it can affect the waterproofing. Let the rug air dry and always follow the care label. A waterproofing spray can help restore water repellency over time.
