Riding Breeches for Every Rider
Good riding breeches make a real difference in the saddle. They give you grip, freedom of movement and comfort, so you can focus on your horse instead of your clothing. At Emmers Equestrian, you’ll find more than 400 riding breeches for women, men and kids, from everyday training breeches to white competition breeches. We carry leading brands such as Samshield, Cavalleria Toscana, Pikeur, EGO7, Equiline, Trolle Projects, Kingsland, Maya Delorez, Dada Sport, Kentucky Horsewear, BOSS Equestrian and our own Emmers collection.
Full grip or knee grip breeches?
The biggest choice when buying breeches is the type of grip.
Full grip breeches (also called full seat breeches) have silicone grip from the knee all the way up through the seat. They give maximum contact and stability in the saddle, which is why they’re especially popular with dressage riders and anyone who wants extra security during collected work or on a lively horse.
Knee grip breeches (also called knee patch breeches) only have grip on the inside of the knee. They give you more freedom to move in the saddle and a closer feel, which makes them the favourite of show jumpers and eventers, and a great all-round choice for everyday riding.
Not sure which suits you? Many riders choose full grip for flatwork and knee grip for jumping, and keep a pair of each.
Breeches for women, men and kids
Women’s riding breeches come in mid-rise and high-waist cuts, with a slim, flattering fit and smart details such as phone pockets, belt loops and contrast piping.
Men’s riding breeches have a straighter, more relaxed fit through the hips and thighs, with durable fabrics built for long hours in the saddle.
Kids’ riding breeches are made to move with young riders and to handle growth spurts, with adjustable waistbands on many models. Sizes run from around age 4 up to teenagers.
White competition breeches
For competitions, most dressage, show jumping and eventing rules call for white or light-coloured breeches. White competition breeches from brands like Samshield, Cavalleria Toscana, EGO7 and Equiline combine a clean, smart look with the same grip and comfort as your training breeches. Complete your show outfit with a show shirt and show jacket.
Breeches for every season
In summer, choose lightweight, breathable breeches with moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you cool and dry. In autumn and winter, thermal and softshell breeches with a soft brushed inner layer keep you warm and protect you against wind and rain. For extra flexibility and a sporty look, you can also browse our riding tights.
Finding the right breeches size
Breeches sizes vary by brand and country, so always check the size guide on the product page.
Men’s breeches usually use European men’s sizes (44 to 58), and kids’ breeches are sized by height in centimetres or by age. Breeches should fit like a second skin: snug enough not to bunch under your leg, but without pinching at the waist or knee.
Complete your riding outfit
The right breeches work best with the right footwear and accessories. Pair them with tall riding boots, or short boots with chaps, a matching belt and riding socks. Prefer to try before you buy? You’re welcome to visit one of our stores, where our team will help you find the perfect fit.
Frequently Asked Questions about Riding Breeches
What’s the difference between full grip and knee grip breeches?
Full grip breeches have grip from the knee through the seat, for maximum stability in the saddle. Knee grip breeches only have grip on the inside of the knee, for more freedom of movement. Full grip is popular for dressage, knee grip for jumping and eventing.
What should I wear for a competition?
Most competitions require white or light-coloured breeches, combined with a show shirt, show jacket, gloves and riding boots. Always check the rules of your federation and discipline before the show.
How should riding breeches fit?
Breeches should fit snugly without wrinkles under your leg, as folds can rub against the saddle. The waist should sit comfortably without gaping at the back, and the hem should end just above your ankle so it fits neatly into your boots.
How do I know my breeches size?
Breeches use different size systems depending on the brand: EU, French, Italian or German sizes. Check the size guide on each product page and compare with your waist and hip measurements. If you’re between two sizes, the fabric and stretch of the model usually decide; our team is happy to advise.
How do I wash riding breeches?
Wash your breeches inside out at 30 °C on a gentle cycle, without fabric softener, as it can damage the silicone grip. Don’t tumble dry; let them air dry instead, so the grip and stretch stay in good condition.
Are breeches with silicone grip better than leather or suede?
Most modern breeches use silicone grip, which is durable, easy to wash and gives a strong hold in the saddle. Some riders still prefer the classic feel of suede patches, but silicone is now the most popular choice for both training and competition.
Can I wear riding breeches in winter?
Yes. Winter breeches have a thermal or brushed inner layer and often a wind- or water-resistant outer fabric, so you can stay warm while keeping full freedom of movement.
