Earlier this year, the FEI implemented new regulations regarding hind leg protection in show jumping competitions.
Now that the competition season is also well underway, we’ve put all the rules into a clear and simple overview for you! Read all about it in our blog.
Young Horse Competitions
For young horse competitions (ages 5 to 8), the rules are slightly stricter than in other classes.
-
The hard, protective part of the fetlock boot may only be placed on the inside of the hind leg.
-
The maximum length allowed is 16 cm, and the closure width must be at least 5 cm.
-
An additional protective section is allowed only if it is made from soft and flexible material. This extra section is not counted toward the maximum length of 16 cm.
The inside of the boot must not contain pressure points. However, stitching and sheepskin lining are allowed. Only non-elastic Velcro fasteners are permitted. Ankle rings are allowed only if they are used for protection purposes, not for performance enhancement. Pastern wraps are prohibited. Additionally, the total weight per leg must not exceed 500 grams.

Other Competitions
For other jumping classes, the FEI allows a bit more flexibility in leg protection. We’ve summarized the key rules for you here.
- Protection is allowed on both the inside and outside of the fetlock, as long as the protective element runs behind the fetlock joint.
- The maximum length is 20 cm.
- No pressure points are allowed on the inside of the boot.
- Stitching and sheepskin lining are permitted.
- A maximum of two fastenings per boot is allowed.
Types of Closures
Velcro:
-
If the boot has two straps, each must be at least 2.5 cm wide.
-
If there is only one strap, it must be at least 5 cm wide.
-
Straps may be elastic or non-elastic if the protective part is only on the inside of the leg.
-
If protection is on both inside and outside, straps must be elastic.
Pin & Hook Closures:
-
Must always be elastic.
-
The width must be at least 2.5 cm.
Important Notes:
-
All fastenings must be secured in one direction only and must not wrap around the entire leg.
-
Vetwraps or other bandages are not permitted underneath the boots. However, bandages can be used instead of fetlock boots.
-
Ankle rings are allowed, but fetlock boots (kootbeschermers) remain prohibited.
-
The total weight must not exceed 500 grams per leg.
