Horse Respiratory Supplements & Nebulizers: Support for Clear, Healthy Airways | Emmers Equestrian
A horse breathes in around 60 to 80 liters of air per minute when galloping, so healthy airways are essential for performance and well-being. Yet many horses struggle with their breathing at some point, from a short cough at the start of work to dust sensitivity, seasonal pollen problems, or equine asthma. At Emmers Equestrian, you’ll find respiratory supplements, nebulizers, and inhalation products to support your horse’s airways from brands such as Cavalor, Equine America, Flexineb, Waldhausen, Sanequine, TRM, Foran, Global Medics and Intibio.
Respiratory supplements for horses
Supplements for the airways often contain herbs and natural ingredients that support clear airways, help loosen mucus, and soothe irritated airways. Choose from products such as Cavalor Bronchix (Pure, Liq, and the handy Pulmo Tube), Equine America Airways (solution and Xtra Strength powder), TRM Equivent, Foran Airvent, Honey +C, Global Medics Respitop, DBS Cough, and DBS Equestrian Breathe. Many owners also add fenugreek to the feed, a traditional herb popular for supporting the airways.
Seasonal and specific support
Some horses only have problems at certain times of the year. Equine America Pollen Eze is designed for horses that are sensitive to pollen in spring and summer. For sport horses in intense work, Equine America Bleeder Gard (pellets and Xxxtreme paste) is made to support the small blood vessels in the lungs, which are under heavy pressure during maximum effort, especially in racing and eventing.
Nebulisers for horses
A nebuliser turns liquid into a fine mist that the horse breathes in, so the product reaches deep into the airways. That makes it a very effective way to deliver medication prescribed by your vet, or to moisten the airways with saline. The Flexineb E3 is a portable, silent nebulizer that’s easy to use in the stable or at shows, available as a complete set with separate controllers and replacement cups. The Waldhausen W-Health & Care Inhaler is another option for regular inhalation at home. Browse our full range in respiratory & inhalation.
Essential oils for inhalation
For a natural approach, Sanequine offers essential oil blends for inhalation, such as Immuno San, Sano Red, and Sano Stress. They’re designed to be used with an inhaler or nebulizer and are popular for supporting the airways and general well-being.
Dust-free stable management
The biggest cause of airway problems in horses is dust: from hay, straw, bedding, and dusty arenas. Supplements and nebulizers work best when combined with good, stable management. Steaming or soaking hay reduces dust and mold spores dramatically, so a hay steamer is one of the best investments for a horse with sensitive airways. Choose low-dust bedding, feed hay at ground level so mucus can drain, keep the stable well ventilated, and turn your horse out as much as possible. Muck out and sweep when your horse is outside, not while it’s in the stable.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my horse cough at the start of work?
A few coughs at the start of exercise can be a sign that your horse’s airways are irritated, often by dust from hay, bedding, or the arena. If the coughing continues, gets worse, or comes with nasal discharge, fever, or breathing difficulties, call your vet.
What is equine asthma?
Equine asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lower airways, usually triggered by dust and mold spores in hay and bedding. Mild cases may only show as a cough or reduced performance; severe cases (previously called COPD, RAO or “heaves”) cause visible breathing effort at rest. It always needs a vet’s diagnosis and treatment plan, combined with a dust-free environment.
How does a nebuliser for horses work?
A nebuliser turns a liquid, such as saline or medication prescribed by your vet, into a very fine mist. A mask over the horse’s nose lets it breathe the mist deep into the airways. It’s quick, quiet, and well tolerated by most horses.
Does steaming hay really help?
Yes. Steaming hay at high temperature significantly reduces dust, mould spores and bacteria while keeping more nutrients than soaking. For horses with sensitive airways, it’s one of the most effective changes you can make.
When should I use a respiratory supplement?
Respiratory supplements can help during the dusty winter months in the stable, during pollen season, after a cold, or for sport horses that need their airways at their best. They support the airways but don’t replace a vet visit if your horse is ill.
Are respiratory supplements allowed in competition?
Not always. Some herbal ingredients used for the airways may not be allowed under competition rules. Always check the product information and your federation’s rules (for example, the FEI) before competing, and respect any withdrawal times.
